Shark Tank Delighted by Hummus Pitch

Delighted by Hummus Update
  • Entrepreneur: Makenzie Marzluff
  • Business: Sweet, healthy snacks made with hummus
  • Ask: $600,000 for 12% equity
  • Result: $600,000 for 25% equity
  • Shark: Mark Cuban

Makenzie brought in five different flavors of Delighted by Hummus and served them to the sharks to showcase the versatility of her product.

At the time of her appearance on Shark Tank, Delighted by Hummus was starting to make a name for itself but was having some issues with branding and growth.

Mackenzie explained that dessert hummus has the same amount of chickpeas as regular hummus but with all of the flavor of a regular dessert.

She offered the sharks mint chocolate chip, vanilla bean, chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, and brownie batter flavors, and they loved it.

When asked about numbers, she said the company had launched 13 months prior and had made over $1 million in sales. The sharks are impressed, and they are even more impressed when she tells them she’s in 1,200 stores.

She explained that she achieved that by driving up and down the coast, calling on grocery stores in a refrigerated van. Mark actually calls her a “beast.”

All the buyers said she was the only one innovating in that space. She invested $20,000 of her own money and raised $400,000 from family and friends at a $4 million valuation. She projects sales for the current year (2017) at $1.3 million.

Guest shark Alex Rodriguez felt the valuation was way too high and dropped out.

Barbara Corcoran shared her fear that Makenzie would not be able to manage a team and delegate tasks well and followed Alex out of the deal.

Lori Greiner didn’t want to go in because she saw too much work ahead with finding and securing distribution.

Kevin O’Leary thought her valuation was too high, so he offered $600,000 as a loan at 11% interest plus 6% equity.

Mark Cuban also offered $600,000 for 25% equity.

Makenzie had to decide between Kevin and Mark. After asking Mark several questions, she made a deal with him for the amount he offered.

Was that a good decision? Find out in our Delighted by Hummus update.

Shark Tank Delighted by Hummus Update

Research for our Delighted By Hummus update found that the deal with Mark never materialized.

Despite the deal falling through, Makenzie still managed to achieve significant sales in the following year.

However, competition arose from bigger companies like Sabra and Boar’s Head entering the dessert hummus market, and it caused sales to drop.

According to our research, in July 2019, her company underwent a rebranding to Delighted By Desserts. Existing inventory was sold through before a complete relaunch.

Her official website initially announced a summer 2021 relaunch, but the COVID-19 pandemic apparently caused a delay.

Subsequently, our Delighted By Hummus update research found that in August 2021, she announced a shift to online-only sales starting in October 2021. The company offered hummus brownies and mixes for making dessert hummus at home.

Makenzie claims she faced challenges from larger competitors, including alleged recipe theft.

As of June 2022, the company website and Facebook page are inactive, and their X account (formerly Twitter) hasn’t been updated since September 2020. These signs suggest that Makenzie’s company might be out of business.

However, her LinkedIn page still lists her as the owner while also mentioning her co-founding of other companies in 2017 and 2021.

While it looks like Delighted by Hummus is out of business. Makenzie has shown prospects of not backing down.

If anything changes, we will let you know, but it looks like this will be our final Delighted by Hummus update.
