Pretty Rugged Update | Shark Tank Season 14

Tracy Slocum needed a way to stay warm and dry on chilly mornings and evenings while spending time on the water near her home in upstate New York. Inspired by her great-great-grandfather’s use of furs during his solo sailing journey, she created Pretty Rugged, a line of windproof, waterproof, and spill-proof faux fur blankets. Will Tracy find a shark to elevate Pretty Rugged to an international brand? Let’s dive into our Pretty Rugged update and pitch recap to find out.

Shark Tank Pretty Rugged Pitch

Shark Tank Pretty Rugged Update
  • Entrepreneur:  Tracy Slocum
  • Business: Lifestyle Brand
  • Ask: $200,000 for 10% equity
  • Result: $200,000 for 25% equity

Tracy started her pitch with a heartfelt story about her great-great-grandfather, Captain Joshua Slocum, using it to introduce her premium blanket line.

Seeking an investment, she explains her desire for a strategic partner to elevate her business and expand its reach.

Her journey hasn’t been without challenges—a flood devastated her husband’s business, leaving their family to rebuild.

She then proceeds to showcase her blankets, describing them as part of a lifestyle brand designed to create products made for life.

The sharks opened their samples, impressed by their luxurious feel, which Tracy said mimics mink.

Tracy shared her brand’s milestones. She introduced the blankets in 2018 and gained significant traction after presenting them at a major trade show in New York, where they won the “Best New Product” award.

Despite these achievements, the flood that wiped out her husband’s business also brought financial setbacks.

Tracy revealed that the blankets cost $36–$40 to make and retail for $290, yielding strong profit margins—80% at retail and 70% wholesale.

Lifetime sales have reached $3 million, with 2021 bringing in $1.2 million in revenue and a net profit of $32,000.

However, she spent $180,000 on trade shows that year and funded a large purchase order.

In 2022, she planned to attend 20 trade shows and had booked $715,000 in sales by July, though she faced a $250,000 loss for the year.

Kevin O’Leary expressed skepticism about the valuation and his ability to scale the business, so he bowed out.

Guest shark Emma Grede praised Tracy for starting a business later in life but doubted faux fur’s staying power as a fashion trend, leading her to exit.

Mark Cuban admired the product but didn’t see how he could add value, so he also stepped away.

Lori Greiner asked for more details on sales. While impressed by the product and its margins, she hesitated.

However, Robert Herjavec admired Tracy’s determination, saying she was a winner. Lori also expressed enthusiasm for faux fur and the strong margins.

In the end, Robert and Lori team up to offer $200,000 for 25% equity. Lori proposed helping with sales while Robert would handle financial guidance.

Tracy countered with 20% equity, but Lori and Robert stood their ground.

Ultimately, Tracy accepted the offer and secured a deal. Was this a good investment for Tracy? Let’s find out in our Pretty Rugged update.
