PolarPro Update | Shark Tank Season 7

While skiing at UC Santa Barbara, Jeff Overall recorded his runs with a GoPro but noticed the videos looked dull and washed out. The bright sunlight created too much glare, making the footage unclear. After researching, he learned that professional filmmakers use polarizer filters to fix this, so he created PolarPro to give action sports enthusiasts the same advantage. Jeff entered Shark Tank Season 7, seeking $500,000 for 10% equity in PolarPro. After his pitch, he secured a deal with Robert Herjavec and Mark Cuban for $1 million for 20% equity.

In terms of a PolarPro update, the company leveraged its shark tank momentum to attract major retailers and expand its product line, introducing innovations like the PowerGrip H2O, Defender lens protector, and the LightLeak Series DSLR lenses.

Shark Tank Polarpro Pitch

Jeff walked into Shark Tank to pitch his company, PolarPro to the sharks.

He asked for an investment to scale production, expand distribution, and position PolarPro to capitalize on the fast-growing drone industry.

He wastes no time introducing his products, including the PowerPole, PowerVault, and drone camera filters.

PolarPro makes various GoPro camera accessories, including filters, selfie poles, charging cases, and more.

The sharks watch closely as he explains each one, clearly impressed by their quality and design.

Jeff stated that PolarPro has 31 different product variations on the market. Moreover, he emphasizes that his company handles everything in-house, from design and manufacturing to marketing and distribution.

His most successful product, he adds, is the drone camera filter set, which has been driving most of the company’s sales.

The filters come in different packs—the three-pack sells for $69.99, while the six-pack costs $149.99 with each filter costing just $12 to produce.

PolarPro’s best products include a battery-powered selfie stick, a charging case for multiple devices, and filters for both your GoPro and drone.

In 2011, sales were only $8,000. However, the numbers skyrocketed, reaching $2.8 million, and this year, they are on track to hit $5.6 million. The sharks were clearly impressed.

Jeff started making these filters and accessories when he was pursuing quality for his recordings. Using his student loan money, he started making his filters. Product design continued to cost Jeff, so his profits were low.

Still, PolarPro was already in 1,200 retail locations and was the third-largest aftermarket drone-related company.

At this point, the pitch is going smoothly. However, Kevin O’Leary suddenly shifts gears and asks about profitability.

Jeff explains that despite making $5.6 million in revenue, the company’s profit by year-end will be only $300,000.

The sharks are confused, expecting a much higher figure.

Mark Cuban immediately questions this, stating that based on Jeff’s profit margins, he should be making well over $1 million.

In response, Jeff clarifies that he reinvests most of the earnings into research and development, spending over $1 million on tooling and product design.

However, this didn’t convince Kevin, he was out immediately. He said consumer electronics was just too crowded for him.

Mark, on the other hand, offered Jeff $500,000 for 10% equity, but Jeff said he wanted to hear other offers.

Daymond John offered $500,000 for 15% equity. Lori Greiner was also interested so she made an offer of $500,000 for 10% equity.

Robert Herjavec said he’d go in with Lori or Mark if they could double the deal. Daymond comes back in with a new offer of $1 million for 17.5% equity.

Jeff asked Mark if he’d go in with Robert at $1 million for 20% and both Mark and Robert agreed to the deal.

Shark Tank PolarPro Update

Our PolarPro update found that the deal with Mark Cuban and Robert Herjavec never closed.

Despite this, Jeff reported that their website traffic surged from an average of 6-10 visitors at a time to 9,000 visitors at one point.

Even after the initial surge, they maintained an average of 100-150 visitors at any given time.

This boost in visibility helped PolarPro attract attention from major retailers and allowed the company to expand its product line.

In the years following their Shark Tank appearance, PolarPro introduced several new products, including:

PowerGrip H2O; a waterproof GoPro pole and a Defender; an innovative lens protector.

More recently, in August 2024, PolarPro launched its first set of DSLR lenses called the LightLeak Series, available in 16mm, 28mm, and 50mm focal lengths.

In September 2024, they released the FilmVault, a sleek aluminum film canister made in collaboration with photographer Peter McKinnon, designed to securely house up to five film rolls, with options for 35mm and 120 medium format rolls.

At the time of this writing, our PolarPro update research found that the company now offers a wide range of camera accessories.

These include filters, matte boxes, drone and GoPro accessories, adapters, step-up rings, and mobile phone filmmaker kits.

Further, their products are available online through retailers like Amazon and at select retailers in countries such as the United States, Brazil, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, France, and Germany.

Despite the deal with the sharks falling through, we’re calling this PolarPro update a success.
