  • Ask: $500,000 for 5% equity

Yashar entered Shark Tank Season 7 with a new approach to the back of smartphones, designed for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The popSLATE turned the back of the phone from empty space into a second screen that could work either separately or at the same time as the front display.

After achieving success on IndieGoGo, this practical phone case was designed to bring the most useful and fun features to the back of the phone too. From photos to e-reading with Kindle technology, this customizable second screen found plenty of demand.

Robert Herjavec asked what the consumer would find useful about this product. Yashar highlighted its time-saving features. Mark Cuban was interested in discussing the cost of production.

The popSLATE was usually sold for $129 and produced for $80. Bulk production would have allowed him to produce the popSLATE for $41.

Lori Greiner was interested in the cost of producing the case for each major type of smartphone. Each run would have cost around $50,000, which is why Yashar focused on the iPhones first.

Kevin O’Leary was interested in when Yashar would be out of the red. He said he was targeting breaking even in less than 12 months after investing $1.6 million. Robert was the first to go out because he saw the popSLATE as too much of a wearable.

Lori followed out by stating that she was worried the costs would keep piling on. Guest shark Ashton Kutcher showed interest in the product but was unimpressed by the price point and Apple exclusivity. He went out.

Mark Cuban was the final shark to go out, explaining that he thought the technology would become obsolete very soon. Yashar had to leave the tank with no deal. What do you think happened after his appearance on the show? Keep reading our popSLATE update to find out!

Our research revealed that popSLATE did enjoy a surge in sales after Shark Tank, but ultimately the company ended its run in 2016.

Yashar has since gone on to create synthetic data products. This will be our final popSLATE update.
