Tranquilo Baby Mats Update | Shark Tank Season 8

During Shark Tank Season 8 Episode 16, Melissa Gersin, who is a pediatric nurse from Boston, Massachusett, pitched her product, Tranquilo. She asked for $100,000 for 10% equity in her lightweight, calming baby mats. She walked away with $200,000 for 15% from Robert Herjavec. Because of how rarely this happens, you’re probably curious about a Tranquilo update.

Shark Tank Tranquilo Update

Tranquilo update

  • Entrepreneur: Melissa Gersin
  • Business: Lightweight, portable vibrating mat designed to calm crying babies
  • Ask: $100,000 for 10% equity
  • Result: $200,000 for 15% equity
  • Shark: Robert Herjavec

Before we proceed with our Tranquilo update, let’s first discuss what Tranquilo is and who it is designed for.

Tranquilo is a vibrating baby mat designed to mimic the sounds and motion that a mother’s womb makes. This helps soothe crying babies. It is available in two sizes (large and small) and is washable and water-resistant, as well as portable.

After showing off the production to the sharks, Melissa asked if anyone was willing to invest in her so that she can make her product global.

As expected, before any offers came, the sharks had some questions. The first was Daymond John, who wondered if the product would be counterproductive and create a bad habit among babies. Melissa reassured Daymond that this was not the case.

She also added that she has a patent on the mat and had done $65,000 in sales and had used her inheritance and sold her home to fund the business. After hearing how all in she was, Daymond decided to offer Melissa $100,000 for 20% with a licensing deal contingency.

Kevin O’Leary then chimed in with a $250,000 for 25% equity offer, contingent that Melissa would quit her job. Melissa countered Kevin with $200,000 for 15%, and Kevin countered back with a 20% equity ask. Mark Cuban then went out followed by Daymond.

Just as Kevin made his final offer of $200,000 for 20%, Robert Herjavec jumped in and gave Melissa exactly what she wanted, which was $200,000 for 15%. Melissa accepted and the two struck a deal. Now for our Tranquilo update. We’ve got good news for those who are wondering where Melissa is after Shark Tank.

Despite not being part of the deal, Melissa actually resigned from her job as a pediatric nurse. According to her Linkedin, she resigned in May 2017 and served as a full-time CEO of Tranquilo until November 2018, which was when Baby Boom Consumer Products acquired Tranquilo.

After the acquisition, Melissa was no longer part of the company but Tranquilo continued expanding its line of products. In 2019, Tranquilo and Baby Soothe Massager’s creator, Lauren Piccirillo, partnered together. Now, both company’s products are available on the official Tranquilo website.

As for Melissa, went on to serve as the Director of Production Development at Baby Brezza from November 2018 until May 2020. She currently serves as a Start-Up Consultant for MG Scully, Inc.
