Billy grew up in a fitness family, as many are familiar with his father, Billy Blanks, creator of Tae Bo, however, Billy Jr. didn’t enjoy the boot camp approach to working out
Billy managed to get Mark Cuban to join them in their dance routine, for some added fun. Kevin O’Leary wrongly assumed that Billy wanted the investment to launch the product on the market, but Billy said he wanted it for the instructor certification program.
He already had successful launches with consumer DVDs, which was a separate business. Robert Herjavec wanted to know about revenue, but Billy didn’t know the figures yet, as the DVDs had only recently been released.
Mark wanted part of the whole business, including the retail, and Robert agreed with him because he thought the brand was Billy.
Daymond John asked Billy if he would combine them, and Billy said he would. He told them that when his wife and him had created Billy Blanks Jr’s Dance With Me, they were homeless.
Barbara Corcoran said she believed in him, but the business model was unclear to her, so she went out.
Robert said he respected Billy but he wasn’t the right person to add value to the business. He went out, followed by Kevin.
This left only Daymond and Mark in play. Daymond partnered up with Mark, and offered $100,000 for 50% equity, contingent on a deal being made with Zumba.
Billy was worried about the Zumba element, and how it would impact the integrity of his brand. Daymond assured him that they’d just use Zumba as distribution, but Billy insisted that his program was very different.
Mark detailed the benefits of the deal, but Billy seemed unconvinced. Daymond told him to talk to his wife, because he was about to rescind the offer.
Mark thought Billy didn’t get what the deal was about, and Barbara agreed. After Billy talked to his wife, he returned to the tank and countered to lose the contingency.
Mark asked him to trust them. The sharks then explained more about how they’d preserve his brand, and not use it to build Zumba.
Billy said he didn’t think it was right, so he left the tank without a deal. However, for the first time in
Daymond quickly went after Billy, and explained in detail what the contingency with Zumba would entail. He then asked Billy to reconsider.
During this emotional moment, Billy finally accepted the offer.
