Shark Tank Nearly Newlywed Update
- Entrepreneur: Jackie Courtney
- Business: Online bridal boutique
- Ask: $35,000 for 10% equity
- Result: No deal
- Shark: None
Jackie entered the tank to pitch her online bridal boutique to the sharks, sharing that she had created an online marketplace where high end dresses could be purchased at a fraction of the price. Then, customers had the option to sell it back to Nearly Newlywed for 50% of the purchase price.
Robert Herjavec was immediately puzzled, asking if he was incorrect in believing that brides prefer to keep the wedding dress to cherish forever. Daymond John asked about the markup, learning that Jackie followed a 30% to 40% margin on all sales. When Robert asked about the sales and discovered that, in 30 days, Jackie had only four sales, the sharks were not pleased to hear this figure.
When Mark Cuban spoke up to find out about her plan from here, she shared that she would soon gain exposure in the Fall issue of Martha Stewart, an editorial piece on Jackie herself in Marie Claire, and a deal with Kleinfeld’s.
Despite this, the sharks seemed less than convinced. Barbara Corcoran went out first, applauding Jackie’s hustle and dedication, but said that it was too early to invest. Robert went out next, repeating that he just didn’t get the idea, and that brides should just buy dresses they could afford.
Daymond spoke next, and shared that he didn’t feel the company was the right fit for him. Kevin O’Leary then offered Jackie $35,000 but asked for 40% equity. Jackie replied by asking if there were any other offers, but only Mark remained in the tank at that. Unfortunately, he wasn’t interested either, and went out.
As Kevin always says, all roads lead back to Mr. Wonderful. Jackie asked if Kevin would consider coming down on the equity, but he said he could go no lower than 40%. For that reason, Jackie respectfully declined the offer and exited the tank with no deal. What then became of her company? Keep reading our Nearly Newlywed update to find out!
We have great news to report in our Nearly Newlywed update! Jackie went on to get the deal with Kleinfeld’s Bridal in New York, and built her company into a successful venture.
