Shark Tank Moonies Pitch

Shark Tank Moonies update
  • Entrepreneurs: McKay Winkel and Carissa Winkel
  • Business: Unique men’s swimwear
  • Ask: $150,000 for 35% equity
  • Result: No deal
  • Sharks: None

Carissa stepped into Shark Tank with her brother McKay on a mission to shake up men’s swimwear, one bold design at a time.

The entrepreneur duo believes that men deserve options that are both daring and comfortable.

To make this vision a reality, they’re asking for a $150,000 investment to increase production and promote Moonies’ playful, attention-grabbing style.

With plans to make a splash in a sea of outdated designs, they need the funding to boost their brand and reach more customers ready for something fresh.

Moonies introduce a fresh take on men’s swimwear. Their unique design—a men’s swim brief with a patented back cutout—makes wearers stand out.

The brand focuses on swimwear that’s fun and bold and breaks away from traditional beachwear.

Carissa and McKay reveal that they have been using social media to create buzz while waiting on patent approval.

Moonies is for men who enjoy expressive, eye-catching style at the beach or pool.

The swimwear is sold on the website for $40. Each unit costs about $12.50 to produce. With bulk orders, production costs can drop to $9 per unit.

This means a potential profit margin of 77.5% with regular production costs and the same with bulk pricing.

The entrepreneurs revealed to the sharks they had made only $1,000 in sales during its launch year.

Upon hearing this, the sharks were visibly shocked.

Mark Cuban says this is not the right investment for him, and he’s the first shark to exit the negotiations.

Guest shark Daniel Lubetzky says the entrepreneurs lack the grit he’s looking for. He’s out.

Robert Herjavec says he can’t get behind the idea, so he declined to invest as well.

In a twist of events, Kevin O’Leary makes an unusual offer: $150,000 for 100% of the patent. He feels that it would be a perfect product for another one of his Shark Tank investments, Rounderbum.

Carissa and McKay turn to Lori Greiner for a better deal, but immediately, Lori says she’s not interested, and she’s out.

The entrepreneurs return to Kevin’s offer and counter with a $5 royalty on every unit sold. But Kevin doesn’t budge.

They took a moment to deliberate and then made another counteroffer for $500,000 for a 100% patent.

Still, Kevin doesn’t budge, and they walk out without a deal.
