Shark Tank Terrashroom Pitch

Entrepreneur: Jared Steele
Business: automated mushroom-growing device
Ask: $175,000 for 2.5% equity
Result: No deal
Sharks: None
Jared opens his pitch by introducing Terrashroom, a fully automated device that makes it easy for anyone to grow gourmet mushrooms at home.
He’s seeking an investment to increase production and improve his subscription model.
Terrashroom is an automated mushroom-growing system designed for easy home use, enabling anyone to cultivate edible mushrooms without prior experience.
It is a user-friendly indoor farming device aimed at culinary enthusiasts and health-conscious consumers who want the convenience of home-grown food.
To use the product, customers fill the water tank, place a mushroom block inside, and select their mushroom type through the app; the device then manages the entire growth cycle.
The company uses a “printer and ink” model, generating recurring revenue from mushroom block sales.
This allows customers to grow various mushroom types continually.
Its fully automated setup, paired with health benefits, offers a simple yet unique indoor growing experience for those who prioritize convenience and wellness.
It retails at $399, and each unit costs $158 to make, yielding a 60.4% profit margin before additional costs.
Terrashroom also offers a subscription for ready-to-grow mushroom blocks at $30 each. The production cost is $3.51, resulting in a profit margin of around 88.3%.
In August 2022, they launched pre-orders and began advertising on Facebook, securing 6,500 pre-orders, totaling $780,000 in revenue.
When the sharks learned that no product had been shipped yet, they were visibly shocked.
Jared further revealed that the first 1,140 units are set to arrive at an Austin warehouse by July.
The company has also built a waitlist of 22,500 potential customers through email sign-ups.
Mark Cuban says he’s worried about the business’s readiness to deliver and the sense that it feels oversold. He’s the first shark out.
Guest shark Daniel Lubetzky says he has issues with the valuation. He’s out.
Robert Herjavec sees Jared as a credible entrepreneur but feels uneasy about having to dig for critical details, like the fact that no units have been shipped yet.
This lack of transparency leads him to step out of the negotiations.
Lori Greiner shares her thoughts, saying the product feels over-engineered, and she also exits the deal.
Kevin O’Leary offers $175,000 for 15% equity. Just as he does, Lori jumps in, saying she doesn’t think Jared is quite ready for investment.
Jared attempts to counter Kevin’s offer with a request for just 5% equity and begins explaining his reasoning.
Disappointed by the counter, Kevin cuts him off and firmly says he’s out. Unfortunately, Jared left the show without a deal.
Let’s get a Terrashroom update to see where the company is today.
