Shark Tank Somnia+ Update

Somnia+ Update | Shark Tank Season 17

Driven by their own uncomfortable experience with dorm beds in college, Brennan Hellmers and Sloane Bary designed Somnia+, a modular dorm bed expansion kit. The product attaches to standard dorm bed frames using Velcro straps and adds an expander platform that increases the bed’s width. It finishes with a mattress topper that evens out the surface, giving students the comfort they deserve in dorm rooms. Will they receive any offer from the sharks? Find out in our Somnia+ update and pitch recap.

Shark Tank Somnia+ Pitch

Shark Tank Somnia+ Update
  • Entrepreneurs: Brennan Hellmers & Sloane Bary
  • Business: A dorm bed extender
  • Ask: $100,000 for 5% equity
  • Result: $100,000 for 17.5% equity
  • Shark: Barbara Corcoran

The idea for Somnia+ came to Brennan and Sloane while they were discussing life after college. Without wasting much time, the next day, they built a prototype using supplies from Home Depot.

After testing it with real students at a local college and seeing the success potential, they began to look for a manufacturer to scale production.

That journey is what has brought them to Shark Tank to pitch Somnia+. The product is a Dorm Bed Expander Kit designed specifically for Twin XL dorm beds.

A complete package comes with Velcro straps, adjustable foam blocks, a memory foam topper, a waterproof mattress protector, and custom-sized sheets. Installation is fast and tool-free

It also expands a standard Twin XL dorm bed by about 25% using a modular system that students can install themselves in minutes.

After the video demonstration, the sharks are quick to express their admiration for the brilliant idea.

But Kevin O’Leary is interested in how things are working right now. So he shifted the conversation to financials.

The kit costs $235 landed and retails for $699. Upon hearing this, Kevin immediately pushed back hard on the price, wanting to know if students would really pay that much.

Sloane responded cleverly, saying that many students already pay between $300 to $400 on mattress toppers alone.

Sloane’s Dad already invested $650,000, pocketing 50% equity. But the deal was structured in a way that would reduce his equity after his loan was repaid with interest.

The business launched a little over a year ago and has already done $188,000 in sales. However, they expect to make around $450,000 in revenue by year-end with a projected $130,000 in profit.

Brennan and Sloane tell the sharks that they primarily rely on organic traffic on social media to find customers. CAC is $60.

Guest shark Chip Gaines asked about protection. Sloane says they have already filed for a utility patent covering all their design process.

Daniel Lubetzky is not a fan of how they dished out some of the information regarding their pitch. He drops out

Joanna Gaines, speaking on behalf of herself and her husband, says they would definitely buy the product as parents.  But ultimately decides against investing. Lori Greiner admired the patent and product but also bowed out.

Meanwhile, Barbara Corcoran offered the entrepreneurs $100,000 for 20% equity, saying that the kit is a one-stop solution.

Kevin countered with a royalty-heavy deal. Brennan pushed back, citing margin pressure. After more negotiation, the founders rejected Kevin’s offer and returned to Barbara.

Sloane asked for flexibility. Barbara countered. They eventually settled at $100,000 for 17.5% equity. They shake hands and leave the stage.

Was this the right investment for the entrepreneurs at this time? Let’s find out in our Somnia+ update.

Shark Tank Somnia+ Update

Our Somnia+ update found that the deal with Babrara Corcoran is still under due diligence. Once we get a solid status about it, we will report it.

However, shortly after their Shark Tank episode aired, the company received widespread media attention with GMT(Good Morning Texas) featuring them live.

They also received lots of orders for their product from several colleges. But we don’t have any official sales numbers at the time of this writing.

You can take advantage of their amazing Shark Tank offer via their official website and get free shipping for Somnia+ to any location within the USA.

We will keep an eye on the entrepreneurs and bring you more progress reports in our next Somnia+ update.
