Mike stepped into
He explained that his kits bring artistry and color back to the traditional craft, making intricate quilting accessible for everyone.
He plans to use the investment to scale production, optimize inventory management, and meet growing demand for his unique quilt designs.
During his pitch, Mike described Legit Kits as a company that offers quilting kits with intricate patterns and over 100 shades of fabric.
Each kit includes everything customers need—patterns, fabric, and clear, step-by-step instructions.
This comprehensive approach allows both beginners and seasoned quilters to craft vibrant and detailed quilts with ease.
Legit Kits launched in 2020, generating $30,000 in sales during its first year. However, the company quickly gained traction.
In 2021, sales grew to $140,000, and by 2022, they reached $400,000. In 2023, the business hit $1 million in revenue.
However, Mike admitted that while the company had a profit margin of 8.7% in 2023, it was revenue-neutral in 2024. The main reason was due to significant investments in scaling, including a new facility and $350,000 worth of inventory.
Kevin O’Leary was the first to ask about customer acquisition. Mike shared that Facebook ads were his primary tool, costing $17 per customer.
He also highlighted quilting’s surprising popularity, pointing out that there are 11.1 million dedicated quilters in the U.S.
While he admitted his advertising efforts were far from perfect, he achieved a 3.5x return on ad spend, turning $3,000 in ads into $10,000 in sales.
Guest shark Jamie Lima raised concerns about inventory management, particularly with 60 SKUs.
She questioned whether Mike had enough data to manage such a diverse product range effectively.
Mike reassured Jamie, explaining that Legit Kits uses Shopify to track sales data and produces kits in batches to keep costs manageable.
Kevin focused on the financials, asking about the cost and pricing of the kits. Mike detailed that a large kit costs $125 to produce and sells for $399.
The company manufactures the kits in-house, leveraging their expanded facility for scalability.
Kevin sees potential in the quilting business and focuses on customer acquisition. He offers $150,000 for 5% equity, with a $10 royalty per unit sold in perpetuity.
Meanwhile, Mark Cuban says the business doesn’t interest him and exits the negotiations.
Barbara Corcoran admires Mike but doesn’t connect with the product. She decides to pass.
Lori Greiner shared her concerns about inventory risks and advised Mike to focus on top-selling designs before opting out.
Similarly, Jamie highlights inventory challenges and says she isn’t the right partner.
In the end, Kevin’s offer stands, and Mike accepts the deal.
