Thereasa is someone you’d typically call a Jack of all trades. She was a former Navy officer who drove an aircraft carrier, she went to law school, she’s a self-taught entrepreneur, and she majored in advertising as an undergrad.
When she entered
Having missed her daughter’s birthday due to her deployment in the Navy, Thereasa came to pitch Bon AppéSweet, which she started as a commitment to someone she loved so much, her daughter.
Bon AppéSweet is a dairy-free, organic chocolate that uses dates as its sweetener. It has no added sugar or sugar alcohol.
Her business is designed around chocolate bars that taste familiar without the usual guilt. It comes in 3 different flavors: Golden Chocolate, Better-Than-Milk, and the Pumpkin Spice Warrior. The sharks have a taste of it and immediately love it.
Mr. Wonderful wants to know the numbers. Thereasa says she doesn’t use a co-packer; she makes everything herself. Each bar costs $2.48 and sells for $8.50. They sold in Whole Foods and in 376 Walmart stores, where she makes around $100,000 annually from each retailer.
The revenue from last year was $526,000, although they made a loss of $141,000 due to a third party that helped them raise funds. The sharks were surprised when Thereasa revealed that she had previously raised $750,000 at $4 million valuation.
Total money raised was $1 million, but she had to lower her valuation on the show because she was looking for strategic help.
Thereasa told the sharks that Sam’s Club had first approved her for a 12-store test before unexpectedly expanding the request to about 300 clubs, thus creating a need for roughly $700,000 in short-term financing.
While she was explaining, Rashaun Williams said he was ready to make an offer. He offered her exactly what she requested for $75,000 for 10% equity, but he also advised her to go for an SBA loan to fund growth.
While Lori Greiner, Kevin, and Kendra Scott all passed, Robert Herjavec indicated an interest in the offer. He made an offer to Thereasa for $100,000 for 10% equity.
In the end, Thereasa walked away with a combined deal of $175,000 for 20% equity, bringing on Robert and Rashaun as partners.
Now let’s get a Bon AppéSweet update to see how Thereasa is doing today.
