Riptie Hair Ties Update | Shark Tank Season 17
While working at a dive shop in Guam, Sarah Fox spent hours in the water each week. What followed was just as frustrating. After every dive, she would spend what felt like forever fighting knots out of her hair. For decades, the hair tie industry has sold the same elastic loop and called the problem solved. Sarah thought it could be better. So she created Riptie, a patented hair tie designed to wrap and secure long hair, keeping it smooth and tangle-free during activity. Which shark will snag this deal? Find out in our Riptie Hair Ties update and pitch recap.

Shark Tank Riptie Hair Ties Pitch

- Entrepreneur: Sarah Fox
- Business: Tangle-free hair ties
- Ask: $250,000 for 10% equity
- Result: $250,000 for 20% equity
- Sharks: Allison Ellsworth and Lori Greiner
Sarah shared that the standard ponytail tie only holds hair in one spot and lets the rest move freely. That works for a quick commute. In open water or strong wind, though, it turns into a tangled mess.
So, she began experimenting in her spare time, testing different elastics until she landed on a design that wraps the braided section of a ponytail from top to bottom, keeping every strand moving in the same direction.
The result is a patent-pending hair tie built to keep long hair tangle-free during any activity.
Sarah showed the sharks how it works. A larger loop secures the ponytail, a braided section wraps down the length, and a smaller loop ties it off. No snarls. No damage. She said no other hair tie compares.
Lifetime sales reached $2.7 million over four years. However, growth accelerated recently. It took two and a half years to reach the first $1 million, but only five months to reach the second.
Sarah now projects $3.5 million in revenue this year.
She only launched the product on Amazon three weeks ago and still sells primarily through her direct-to-consumer channel. Amazon already accounts for about 15% of daily sales.
Each hair tie retails for $12.95 and carries a 92% gross margin.
Her revenue has climbed quickly. She made $40,000 in 2022. That jumped to $470,000 in 2023 with $80,000 in profit. In 2024, sales reached $1.5 million, though profit came in at $86,000.
Robert caught the problem. With 92% margins, the math didn’t add up. Lori asked where the money went. Sarah said marketing. She spent $400,000 last year to generate $1.5 million in sales.
Daymond asked about her salary. She paid herself $65,000. He said her numbers had $700,000 in unanswered questions. He went out.
However, Kevin offered $250,000 for 25% equity.
Lori and Allison both loved the product. They know hair. They offered to go in together with $250,000 for 20% equity.
Kevin immediately undercut them. He revised his offer to $250,000 for 15% equity.
Robert said her growth impressed him, but the numbers still didn’t work for him. He went out.
Sarah now had two offers. She asked Lori and Allison if they would match Kevin at 15%. She pointed to her Amazon launch and clear product-market fit. What she needs now is help expanding the brand.
But Lori and Allison held firm on their original offer.
After a brief moment of back-and-forth with no movement, Sarah accepted their deal of $250,000 for 20% equity.
